October 6, 2019

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Our annual Halloween Parade is scheduled for October 31 at 1:15 pm for grades 1-5 and afternoon kindergarten. Morning kindergarten will have their parade at 9:45 am and will follow a different parade route (see 2nd picture below).

Lunches will begin at 11 a.m. in order to allow time for the parade & party.

Children should come to school in costume.  As we are an elementary school, please ensure that all costumes are child friendly.  Children may not wear very frightening costumes/masks or gory bloody makeup. Props which can be used as weapons are also not permitted.  I am always proud to say that most of our children dress in positive, happy costumes as opposed to morbid, mature or frightening costumes. Please keep with this tradition.

Students will leave the school through the main doors beginning at 1:15 and walk around the flagpole circle, through the faculty parking lot, and then walk close to the tree line behind the school, walk down the path along the gym/playground, and re-enter through the new addition entrance by the playground. Students will NOT reenter the school through the same door they exited. I have attached a picture of the route on the next page and I have also suggested where parents should stand in order to spread out. All children will walk the entire route, so no matter where you stand, you will definitely see all of the children. We will only walk around one time. We will begin with the 5th grade, then 4th grade, then 3rd, 2nd, 1st and end the parade with kindergarten. (Morning kindergarten will walk around the back twice beginning at 9:45 am.)

SEE PICTURE OF PARADE ROUTES in the link HERE.

Parents assigned to help with classroom parties that have food and favors to deliver must report to the foyer first to sign in. You may park in the stop and drop lot, but please do not arrive before 1 PM. (morning kindergarten class parents 9:30am) Students of parent volunteers may be released at 3:15PM. Lunch will be served early on this day in order to allow enough time for the parade and the party. Parents who can walk to the parade should walk.

Fire Laws:  NO parents are permitted to park in the back lot, directly in front of the school or by fire hydrants.  These areas are fire zones.

DO NOT DOUBLE PARK OR BLOCK ANYONE’S DRIVEWAY

If your child will not be partaking in Halloween festivities, please inform your child’s teacher so we can arrange for your child to enjoy an alternate activity here at school.

Naturally, the parade is dependent upon the weather. If it is raining, the parade will be cancelled and classroom parents may begin the party at 1:30pm (class parents may set up at 1 p.m.). Thank you for your cooperation.  With your help, we’ll make this a safe, happy, fun time for the children.

Sincerely,

Nicole Cirillo

Dear Parent or Guardian of Students in Grades 2, 3 and 5,

EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, SEPT 27

We would truly appreciate your help by sending in $5 to allow your child to receive this enriching (and fun!) resource. And if you have the means to sponsor a classmate who might not be able to contribute, it is deeply appreciated.

TIME for Kids is a current-events magazine that helps every child in our class read and enjoy learning. It also helps boost reading and critical-thinking skills that our children need to succeed in the classroom, on the state tests, and beyond. With journalists and former educators leading our editorial team, TIME for Kids brings reliable and relevant nonfiction text and primary sources into the classroom.

With TIME for Kids, your child can read nonfiction articles about real events and issues that are important to them. Topics cover a wide range—from social studies and science to national and world news and geography. Because TIME for Kids is written at an appropriate level for each grade, it helps both teachers and parents discuss current topics with students. And, it helps students get excited to talk to one another about current events!

Bringing that excitement to our classroom is what we need your help with. With your contribution, your child will receive a classroom TIME for Kids subscription for the school year with engaging content that helps him or her develop vocabulary, reading comprehension, critical thinking, news literacy and writing skills.

Thank you for your contribution and for working with us to enrich your child’s education.

Sincerely,

The Woodbrook PTO

Return attached slip with your five dollars to your child’s teacher as soon as possible by Friday, Sept 27 OR place $5 in an envelope labeled as follows:

Dear Parents,

We hope your children are enjoying lunch at Woodbrook. You can make the lunch lines move faster by opening an account on myschoolbucks.com and setting up a payment plan so that your child does not need to bring in cash. This is the preferred method of payment. We will use myschoolbucks.com (school store) for trip payments and other events through the year, so it would be beneficial to open your account (even in kindergarten) at this point in the year.

Please also note the attached flyer which allows you to view the menu and filter for allergens as well.

Dear Parents of 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade Students,

Fourth and fifth grade students will be permitted to take home their Chromebooks, when necessary, beginning next week. The devices will not be sent home if specific homework has not been assigned.

Third grade students have their own personal devices here at school, but those devices will not be sent home.

We highly recommend that parents take out insurance for these devices, especially if they are going to leave the building. Each child is assigned their own device and will be responsible for any damage to the device which includes loss, broken keyboard, cracked screen, etc.

You will receive a letter by Wednesday with the serial number or BOE asset tag number and the brand/model of your child's device in order to purchase insurance. In addition, we ask that you return the letter to your child's homeroom teacher noting whether you have purchased insurance or if you have decided to waive the insurance and assume responsibility for the device.

The insurance information is located HERE and also on the Woodbrook website under Announcements. Please be sure you have completed the Technology Use Agreement & Google Apps for Education form located in your Parent Portal.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cirillo

August 28, 2019

Dear Parents of 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade Students,

I am proud to announce that registration for our Wednesday night math club is now open. Each year, approximately 25% to 40% of our 3rd, 4th & 5th grade students participate in challenging and engaging mathematical discourse which supports them in mathematical practices, mathematical concepts, as well as collaboration and listening/speaking skills.

Math club meets on Wednesdays 7-8 pm in the cafe. The club is run by volunteer parents - we NEED coaches to run the club!  Please sign up as a coach (if more than one parent per household is available to coach, great!) If you are worried about being a coach, the solutions are in the back of the book!

Registration fee: $68 (GRADE 3) OR $63 (GRADES 4/5) (money is used to pay for registering the teams with the organization(s), the book(s), end of year party)

We rely on email. You must check your email before coming to the math club. There will be an orientation for PARENTS new to math club during the first few weeks of school - typically during the 1st & 2nd grade Back to School Night. Look for the flyer!

After you register HERE, you will receive payment instructions on the confirmation screen immediately after you hit submit on the registration form (it will not be in a spearate email).

All payments are done online using myschoolbucks.com. You will also use this site to pay for school lunch, school trips and other opportunities. There are TWO separate fee accounts within your "myschoolbucks" account. The site will always open to your lunch/meal account. You will have to go to SCHOOL STORE on the site menu and click on FEATURED ITEMS in order to pay for the math club (another non lunch items). Do NOT pay for math club on the lunch/meal account.

Thank you and PLEASE volunteer to coach!

I have some homework for parents and for children due on the very first day of school!

  • Both you and your child must know your teacher’s name, grade and homeroom
  • Every child must have all parents and guardians cell phone numbers memorized

Below, please find the most pertinent information for your children and their safety.

Arrival - See arrival diagram below.

  • Any parent who is going to wait with their children during arrival must park in a legal spot on a neighboring street. Parents may not park in the stop & drop lot or in the faculty lot.
  • Kindergarten line up is in the front of the school on the grass. (See attachment below). After the first few days of school, kindergarten will line up by the main entrance.
  • First grade line up is behind the playground for the 1st day only. (See attachment below). Beginning on the 2nd day of school, first grade will line up by the main entrance.
  • Second grade will line up by the main entrance.
  • Third, fourth and fifth grade students will enter through the glass doors by the playground.
  • Bus riders...expect bus delays for the first few days of school.

Lunch

  • Set up money on myschoolbucks.com and choose if you would like to allow your child to purchase snacks or just the lunch entrees
  • Every child in grades 1-5 must memorize his or her id number

Dismissal - See dismissal diagrams below.

Fill out the dismissal form HERE now, if you did not complete one for each child as directed above!

Walkers/Car Riders/Private After Care

  • All walkers and car riders will be dismissed to their grade level areas by the playground.
  • Parents should wait for their children in the areas marked by the appropriate grade levels.
  • Please do not wait under the canopy as children will be exiting in that area.
  • Tell your child to wait for you by their grade level area and not to walk away without you UNLESS you want them to walk home without you. Make this point very clear as children become impatient and will walk home thinking you are not coming if you are not waiting for them.
  • Did you complete this form to let us know how your child will be going home on the first day of school?
  • On Parent Portal, be sure you have chosen the FIRST box of the "Dismissal Policy Request Form" to allow your child to meet you by the playground at dismissal.
  • Be sure any care givers, after school workers, relatives or friends know your child’s name & teacher if they are coming to meet your child after school.

Bus Rider Dismissal (including YMCA)

Click HERE to see when the children have boarded the bus at Woodbrook each afternoon (updated daily). Save this link for daily use.

This is how you will find out if the bus has left Woodbrook on time or is late - no phone calls will go out.

  • Do not let your child ride the bus home if he or she does not know his or her exact drop off stop - your child will get lost, the bus driver does NOT track which students get on or off each bus and there are no adults on the buses
  • Parents and students must know which bus they take (WB1, WB2, etc)
  • Arrange for your child to have a bus buddy at your bus stop who will sit with your child and/or ensure they are getting off at the correct stop together
  • Tell your child to come straight home from the bus stop - no going to the park or to a friend’s house without telling you first
  • On Parent Portal, be sure you have chosen the FIRST box of the Dismissal Policy Request Form to allow your child to take the bus home.
  • Wait for your child at the bus stop
  • Practice going to and from the bus stop with your child before the first day of school
  • Expect bus delays for the first few days of school - this is a guarantee!

ABC/Latchkey

  • Inform your child that he/she will go to latchkey here at school. Pick up from latchkey is at the cafe door past the playground. Do not pick up your child from school without telling latchkey or we will think your child is lost.
  • On Parent Portal, be sure you have chosen the FIRST box of the Dismissal Policy Request Form to allow your child to be dismissed to latchkey.

Other - Mandarin Academy

  • Inform your child that he/she will go to the Mandarin Academy.
  • Ensure that the care takers know your child’s name & teacher if they are coming to meet your child after school.

Please log onto your Parent Portal for your child's homeroom, teacher's name & room number. If you are having difficulty with Parent Portal, check to see if you (or your spouse/partner) have already registered with another email address. You must email genesis.parent@edison.k12.nj.us for assistance. Unfortunately, the school does not have access to Parent Portal.

I look forward to seeing you on the first day of school!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Cirillo
