The school counseling department at Woodbrook Elementary School strives to meet the academic, career, and personal/social goals of every student - in doing so, students are more prepared to meet the challenges of the future!
Individual Counseling
Students at Woodbrook Elementary School are able to meet one-on-one with their school counselor, Mrs. Romero, to discuss issues that may be affecting their academic success. During sessions, play therapy techniques (i.e. drawing, role-playing, puppetry, etc.) are often used as a way to discuss school counseling goals, as outlined by the American School Counselor Association. This includes helping students reach their academic, personal/social, and career potential. In order to receive individual counseling, Students may self-refer or teachers may request that the counselor meet with a student or students in their class. As a parent, you may always call to request individual counseling services for your child.
Small Group Counseling
Another counseling service available to students at Woodbrook Elementary School is group counseling. This is done by grade level and topic, such as making and keeping friends or self-esteem. These groups and topics are decided based on a needs assessment completed by classroom teachers and by parent/teacher/school personnel feedback. In order for a student to participate in small group counseling (usually 5-7 participants), a permission form must be signed by his or her parent/guardian. Typically, these groups take place during lunch so students will not miss core academic subjects or specialty areas. Most commonly, the topic of our Lunch Bunch revolves around building Social Skills.
Classroom-Based Counseling
All students at Woodbrook have the opportunity to meet their school counselor during classroom school counseling sessions. These lessons focus on a specific issue that is positively or negatively impacting learning in the classroom/school and are designed around the American School Counselor Association standards. Teachers sign-up for Monthly Counseling Lessons, which vary based on the need of the classroom/school. Common classroom counseling topics are Making and Keeping Friends, Kindness, Respect, Character Education, and Bullying Prevention.
School-Wide Programs
We have many school-wide programs to reinforce the importance of Kindness and Respect. These include, but are not limited to participation in New Jersey's "Week of Respect", "Kindness Week" and "Peace Week." Woodbrook students also participate in "The Great Kindness Challenge" and our Positive Behavior Supports in Schools Beaver Buck Program. Social emotional education is an integral part of learning here at Woodbrook. Character education is embedded throughout our curriculum, across all subject areas. At Woodbrook, we believe in nurturing every part of your child's growth—academically, socially, and emotionally.
